Revival and renewal: a new life for an old farm

The Farmhouse

Making your way up the vineyard-lined drive of Old Farm Winery at Hartland, you are met with a view that both takes you back in time and hints at memories still to be made. This very sight — of the property’s majestic hilltop farmhouse — captured winery owner Jon Hickox’s heart more than 30 years ago. “I remember driving past this old farmhouse many, many times as a kid when I worked on the farm across the street,” Jon says. “It always caught my eye with its distinct look, surrounded by great Black Walnut trees, and the beautiful Broad Run creek right below it.”

Now, Jon has returned to his roots here in Aldie, VA, bringing the farmhouse back to its former beauty while adding graceful new touches inside and out, like the charming wrap-around porch that we know our brides will love! With its stunning vineyard views, it will be the perfect backdrop for those who love that winery aesthetic, wines produced by one of the most award-winning winemakers in Virginia while enjoying the countryside only an hour’s drive from Washington, DC.

The Vineyards

The on-site vineyards are what truly make your day at Old Farm Winery at Hartland a farm winery experience. The Vidal Blanc, Petit Manseng, and Albariño grapes that grow here will be used to make our wines, once fully grown, along with grapes from our estate vineyards at Rock Mill, Bull Run, and Willowsford. As a Virginia Farm Winery, it is important to us that our wines are made from Virginia grapes.

The Bank Barn

While the farmhouse plays a starring role at Old Farm Winery at Hartland, featuring prominently on our logo and wine bottle labels, it shares the stage with another very special building. Just a short way down the hill, guests can explore the 19th century “bank barn”. Bank barns are built into a hillside embankment to allow direct access to the second floor from outside. With a renovation using local reclaimed barn wood and authentic timber framing to match the original hand hewn timbers, what was once the domain of hard working farmers will be transformed into an entertainment and wedding venue, the perfect place to celebrate for the hard workers of today.

The Bar

The design of Old Farm Winery at Hartland’s new outdoor bar will echo the “old farm” ambience of the farmhouse and bank barn. The bar will have easy access to the seating area on our expansive lawn for warm, sunny days of delicious wines and picnics, while roll-down glass doors create an inviting climate controlled space to keep the chill at bay the rest of the year. In every season, your guided or independent tasting experience at our wine bar comes complete with gorgeous vineyard views.
